Ranking The Top NFL Offenses

NFL Offenses Ranked By Scoring Behavior

Ranking Every NFL Offense

The Let us state the obvious: the only way to win football games is to score more points than your opponent. Scoring points is the most important behavior an offense can perform in order to win games.

Behaviors, though, can only occur with opportunity. Basic physics. In applied behavior analysis, we call this "Temporal Extent”.

For an offense, that opportunity is defined as when they possess the ball. Simple enough. Once the offense takes possession of the ball, we can measure how much time it takes for them to complete the act of scoring points within that possession, over the course of a full game.

At Football Behavior, we quantify that with “scoring behavior rate (SBx)”. We are able to determine which offenses are scoring points the most efficiently with the opportunities they have. Below are the top 5 offenses from 2022 in SBx, along with the full list of 32 for Pigeon Picks subscibers.

Top 5 NFL Offenses In SBx

For reference, SBx Rate is measured in points scored per minute of possession time. Possession time for the offense is the finite opportunity an offense has to score the ball. This is more accurate than looking at points per game because the offense does not possess the ball for the whole 60 minutes of game time. These are the teams who make the most of their possessions in both points, and efficiency.

What Does It All Mean?

Scoring Behavior Rate (SBx) is a way to measure how efficient an NFL offense is at scoring points when they have the ball. In other words, which offenses are making the most of their limited opportunities?

Many factors impact the ability for an offense to score the amount of points necessary to win a game. Some of it can be attributed to the defense, some can be laid at the feet of key injuries to important players, and some of it can be seen in midseason coaching changes.

Coaches and the front office create the environment that the players then go and perform in. It operates best when it is a perfect balance of performance behavior inside of a well constructed environment. Key changes to either side of that equation can result in massive behavior changes from the team as a whole.
