With Reports Of A Deal Upwards of $55 Million A Year, Dolphins Should Think Long And HArd

1. Dolphins Should Pause On Tua Contract Talk

There is a lot to like about Tua. He is undoubtedly a top-15 quarterback. But is he enough? So far, the answer is a resounding NO.

Not when every year for the better part of the next decade you have to go through Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, and Patrick Mahomes…

…ya Know, the three quarterbacks the Dolphins went 0-3 against to close their season.

2. The Bills Make Major Changes To Save Cap

The Bills moved on in the last 24 hours from defenisve stalwarts like Jordan Poyer and Tradavious White. It is an interesting move as their window is closing faster than they would like.

Our Applied Football Behavior Analytics show, specifically with the Improvement Index, that their defense regressed in Score Prevention Behavior (points allowed per minute of opponent possession time) by 17% week over week this season.

That is even worse than the 13% regression they had just the year prior in 2022. Changes were needed, and when your hardcapped financially, those changes come to a unit in need of environmental change anyway.

3. Broncos Give Wilson Permision To Meet With Teams Ahead Of Release

The Broncos announced on Monday that Russell Wilson was going to be released. Today, according to ESPN Report, sources say the Broncos have given him permission to meet with other teams.

The move is an interetsing one because it is clear that environmentally, this was never going to work between him and Sean Payton. Why? We’ll never really know. But it was enough for the Broncos to be ok with $85 Million in dead cap.

Our analytics show that the Broncos are maybe not that far away. After a dreadful start to the season, the Brocnos improved overall by nearly 2% in Applied Scoring Behavior. That was 11.37% better than 2022, which ended in an over 9% regression. That was the 10th best year over year turnaround in the league.

Theyn finished just outside the top 10 in margin for error, and improved on that score by 10.8 points from 2022, which was the 8th best year over year improvement in the league.

Im not convinced it couldn’t have continued to get better, nor am I convinced Russell Wilson is finished. However, it appears the relationship between he and Sean Payton was likely to always hold both sides of that environment back.
